There are plenty of Keswick walks directly from
the door of Hazelwood so you can leave the car and head straight
out onto the Lakeland
fells. Keswick is centrally located within the Northern Lake
District with Skiddaw, Blencathra, the Helvellyn range and the
Borrowdale fells within walking distance (or a short bus or launch
ride away!). From the door of Hazelwood you can:
1. walk up the hill behind the hotel to Castlerigg Stone Circle.
This ancient monument is one of the best examples of stone circles
in the country (see left bottom) and is surrounded by
the most amazing Lake District scenery. From here you can drop
into St. Johns in the Vale and onto the Helvellyn Range
2. head up the hill towards Walla Crag. This relatively short
walk provides superb views across Derwentwater towards Newlands
and down the valley to Bassenthwaite Lake. Heading over Walla
Crag leads you down to Ashness Bridge, Surprise View and the
stunning hamlet of Watendlath
3.
drop down the hill to the old railway line and walk towards Threlkeld
where you can turn off towards either Latrigg (and amazing views
over Keswick and Derwentwater) and then onto Skiddaw or head
to Blencathra (the railway line can also provide a pleasant short
flat walk )
4. head through town and down to the lake shore to catch one
of the many cruises around the lake. You can disembark at one
of five landing stages to head into Newlands or over Cat Bells,
High Spy and other great Borrowdale fells - visit the Keswick
launch website
5. catch a Borrowdale bus from the town centre to go to Seathwaite
where you have a huge choice of superb fells, from the amazing
views from Glaramara, to Great Gable or Scafell Pike - see the bus
